Travel medical insurance: A case study of support and repatriation

May 02, 2024

Traveling to the United States can be an adventure filled with incredible memories. However, it’s essential to be prepared in case of unforeseen medical needs. This case study highlights the importance of travel medical insurance for U.S.-bound travel, and how one traveler received important medical and transport support from UnitedHealthcare Global’s SafeTrip team during a challenging health situation far from home.

The situation

An elderly traveler embarked on a solo trip to the United States to visit family. Unfortunately, early in his visit, he experienced a fall that resulted in multiple fractures. Recognizing the need for additional assistance, he reached out to UnitedHealthcare Global for help.

Global expertise and support in a crisis

Upon receiving the case, UnitedHealthcare Global’s Emergency Response Center (ERC) swiftly rose to the occasion. The member’s level of care was assessed, and the ERC team established communication with the medical facility and obtained all necessary medical information, including diagnosis and treatment plan.

Unfortunately, the member experienced additional symptoms, requiring further medical attention and causing concern. In collaboration with the U.S.-based medical director, UnitedHealthcare Global determined the best plan of action was repatriation home for further treatment and recovery. UnitedHealthcare Global helped provide the member with travel arrangements for repatriation, and coordinated a plan to include a medical escort to be by the member’s side, ensuring a safe and smooth transition back home and prioritized the traveler’s health and well-being all along the way.

Before you embark on a journey to the United States

This case study emphasizes the importance of having travel medical coverage, particularly for U.S.-bound travel. In this scenario, the traveler faced an unexpected medical emergency, and required medical care plus specialized transportation arrangements. Without travel medical coverage, the financial burden and logistics for this experience could have been overwhelming.

UnitedHealthcare Global’s SafeTrip offers a variety of travel and medical insurance options that can make all the difference in a crisis. This includes the dedicated SafeTrip customer care team with 45+ years of experience, who offers 24/7 support for travelers, helping to ensure safety and well-being throughout a journey. Review your SafeTrip plan options for your next U.S. vacation.
