Case Study: Managing a head injury while traveling in Mexico

March 25, 2025

Overview

A young adult traveler experienced a significant health emergency while visiting Mexico. The incident involved a concussion, resulting in a series of medical interventions and coordinated efforts between the local medical team and the travel health insurance provider. This case study highlights how this member was able to lean on expert support thanks to their SafeTrip plan from UnitedHealthcare Global, and the steps taken to manage their condition and ensure a smooth return home.

Situation

While traveling in Mexico, a young adult was involved in an accident that resulted in a concussion. The member was taken to the emergency room, where they presented with symptoms including headache, vomiting, and right ankle pain. A CT scan was performed to assess the extent of the injuries. The medical team provided initial treatment, including pain management.

Once they were stable, they contacted the 24/7 UnitedHealthcare Global assistance team for support, reducing the stress of having to coordinate getting specialized care in a country they were not familiar with.

Action

The member was then seen by a neurologist as an outpatient. At this consultation, the member reported persistent symptoms such as a headache, slow thinking, sensitivity to light, and difficulty walking. The neurologist recommended hospital admission for further observation and treatment, and because of their SafeTrip plan they were able to have additional, trusted clinical specialists review their care plans to make sure they were getting the appropriate treatment.

When returning for a follow-up neurology appointment, the neurologist prescribed medications to manage the lingering symptoms. The member was also advised to follow up with a primary care physician upon returning home to ensure continued care and monitoring of the concussion.

Throughout the medical journey, the UnitedHealthcare Global clinical team played a crucial role in facilitating the member’s care. They identified appropriate local health care providers, ensured timely appointments, provided billing assistance, and closely monitored the member’s condition. The clinical team also ensured that the member had a comprehensive plan for follow-up care when returning home, including a prescription for necessary medications and a recommendation to see their primary care physician back home.

Outcome

The young adult’s medical needs were effectively met, and they were able to travel home without further issues. The prescribed medications helped manage the lingering symptoms, and the advice to follow up with a regular physician ensured ongoing care.

Conclusion

This case demonstrates the importance of comprehensive travel health insurance with 24/7 assistance in managing medical emergencies abroad. Coverage such as SafeTrip International Travel Medical Plus or SafeTrip International Travel Medical may help reduce the risks and challenges associated with medical emergencies abroad. The coordinated efforts between the medical team and the support they received from the UnitedHealthcare Global support and assistance teams, through their SafeTrip plan, ensured that the young adult received timely and appropriate care, leading to a successful recovery and a smooth return home.
