Eat or don't eat? Eating safely on your trip
May 01, 2017
Exploring the food of other countries is one of travel's greatest pleasures. However, especially in developing countries, eating contaminated food can take the fun out of your trip in a hurry.
These guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention can help you choose wisely.
Yes
- Foods that are cooked and served hot
- Food from sealed packages
- Hard-cooked eggs
- Fruits and vegetables washed in safe water
- Pasteurized dairy foods
- Bottled or canned beverages
- Hot drinks
No
- Room-temperature food
- Food from street vendors
- Raw or under-cooked eggs, meat or fish
- Salads
- Flavored ice
- Unpasteurized dairy foods
- Tap water
Have Fun, but don't over-indulge
Traveling can mean more restaurant food than you're accustomed to, more sampling of new foods, and more drinking. But over-indulging can lead to digestive upsets, troubled sleep and time wasted recovering from overdoing. Enjoy your trip, but try to stick somewhat to your normal dining routine to feel your best the next day.
